The Illusion of Happiness
“Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:4, NASB).
Is it odd that Jesus began His public ministry teaching how to be happy? Simple teachings. Simple illustrations. The first lesson was simply realizing you are spiritually dry. “Hey guys, listen” Jesus might have said, “If you really want to be happy, you need to be at a place in your life where you are all out of options and I am the only one that can help.”
“You’re blessed when you feel you’ve lost what is most dear to you. Only then can you be embraced by the One most dear to you” (Matt 5:4, TM).
I remember when I was at the lowest point I had ever been at in my life. I had lost almost everything and there was still more to lose and it was surely coming. Emotionally and spiritually I was low. Depression was overtaking my mind and my life. Death would have been welcomed. When I was invited to the pastor’s home group, I reluctantly agreed, but I didn’t want to go. My pride was in all out spiritual warfare against my soul, my mind and my circumstances. I was losing the battle and I didn’t have anywhere to retreat and I nothing left in my arsenal with which to fight. Read the rest of this entry »
The Pursuit of Happiness
“You’re blessed when you’re at the end of your rope. With less of you there is more of God and his rule” (Matthew 5:3, TM).
Wow! A promotion! a pay raise! a company car, an expense account!?! More money than we had ever made. A new house, 10 acres and a new life…a new life and life was good. It got better! A new baby. Dana was able to quit her job and stay home with the baby. A new dog, a new chicken coop and a wonderful garden. Life was good! A private pond for fishing. A nice walking trail through the woods.
